Why: In early 2026, BLA surveyed local families with young children to better understand their needs. The top priority amongst the 44 respondents was for “expanded programming and dedicated play spaces for young children.” Respondents also requested more baby-parent activities (especially on weekends), more afterschool and weekend programming, dedicated toddler spaces and times, and “an indoor space where children can explore, learn, and move.” They noted a need to foster a supportive community for parents.

 

The BLA findings echo anecdotal evidence from the Downtown Brattleboro Alliance, which often receives requests for an indoor playspace downtown; in fact, an indoor playspace is among the most requested amenity residents would like to see downtown.

 

Local demands for a playspace resonate with research showing that play is an essential ingredient of healthy early childhood development. Through shared play experiences, young children develop communication skills, emotional regulation, cooperation, empathy, problem-solving abilities, and self-confidence. Unstructured play with other children provides opportunities to practice negotiation, conflict resolution, and self-advocacy while strengthening the executive-function skills associated with later school success. For families with young children, community playspaces also reduce social isolation and foster supportive relationships among caregivers. Together, these benefits contribute to children's social-emotional development, school readiness, and long-term well-being, while also benefiting parents.
